46th Street Mural Project

Artist: Todd Lown

This mural was completed in August 2010.

Fremont and Wallingford neighbors organized in 2009 to build community and improve the cityscape by constructing a lasting mural to brighten this underpass, used by thousands of cars and pedestrians every day. The mural links Upper Fremont and Wallingford, and helps deter graffiti and crime. The project was funded in part by a Neighborhood Matching Fund award of the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. The fiscal sponsor was the Fremont Neighborhood Council.

This mural started with enough interest from community members to form a project Steering Committee and carry out a lot of work coordinating with public agencies, private sector donors, other community organizations and volunteers. Fifteen years later, the mural suffers from benign neglect and active vandalism, with an increase in tagging incidents. If a maintenance plan can’t be worked out the mural will eventually be painted over.

What is needed: Interested neighbors who frequently interact with the mural enough to quickly note new tags. A neighborhood “rapid response” team to quickly paint over small tags, and to clean and maintain the mural. A new steering committee organized to come up with a funding plan to restore/repaint and/or contract maintenance of the mural with the help of Urban Artworks.
