46th Street Mural Project

Artist: Todd Lown

This mural was completed in August 2010.

Fremont and Wallingford neighbors organized in 2009 to build community and improve the cityscape by constructing a lasting mural to brighten this underpass, used by thousands of cars and pedestrians every day. The mural links Upper Fremont and Wallingford, and helps deter graffiti and crime. The project was funded in part by a Neighborhood Matching Fund award of the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. The fiscal sponsor was the Fremont Neighborhood Council.

This mural started with enough interest from community members to form a project Steering Committee and carry out a lot of work coordinating with public agencies, private sector donors, other community organizations and volunteers. Fifteen years later, the mural suffers from benign neglect and active vandalism, with an increase in tagging incidents.

Update 1/24/1016: Short Term Plan

  • The City of Seattle Graffiti Program will provide the paint for maintaining the mural.

  • FNC has funded a one-time urgent repair by Urban Artworks.

Long Term Plan: The long-term solution is to identify a group of neighbors and community members who can provide ongoing care of the mural.

What is still needed:

  1. Paint storage: A secure place to store approximately 15–30 gallons of paint.

  2. Volunteer mural responders: A team of 5–10 volunteers who can respond to tags and help restore the mural within 10 days.
