Helen Tapp Bench Project
Tile Artist: Veronica Truffat
Bench Architect: George Heideman
This bench is on private property on Fremont Avenue south of 43rd Street. It was created between 1996-1998. The tile artist, Veronica Truffat, was a member of the Fremont Arts Council. Architect George Heideman was a long-time FNC Board member. Helen Tapp was instrumental in rebuilding the FNC after a hiatus in the 1980s. Read more of the history of Helen Tapp and the bench here.
The bench is deteriorating and faces property development pressures. It needs to be moved to a new location and restored, or perhaps recreated entirely. The tiles shown are even more damaged now, but the book tiles read:
One Person Can Make a Difference
In loving memory of Helen Tapp, community activist, teacher, friend & Fremont Neighborhood Council co-founder
What is needed: Someone knowledgeable about tile art who can determine the feasibility of removing, restoring, or recreating the tile work. An architect/designer/builder who can make recommendations for moving the bench seat or building a new one. People to research potential new locations for the bench (the A.B. Ernst Park extension has been suggested).
